Title: PSP Laptop model .5
Post by: folklord36 on June 01, 2009, 08:40:35 PM
Ok this is the PSP laptop .5 this is also a work in progress and I have some cleaning up to do and a few additions. This is the main body assembly and how the completed version will look. Let me know what you guys think  .

The LCD has an extended FFC so it dosent have the whole big FPC hanging out and exposed and being bent around. The normal PSP speakers were relocated to the big holes and covered up with the material from headphones.

The top is a joytech visor only cost 10 bucks and has the same finish as a PSP so it all matches. It has a ridgid hinge that can bend to any angle up to 180 degrees. It also spins so I put a dab of glue too keep it from spinning but still fold.

Keyboard is fully functional read about it over at PS2dev.org Nico also helped make it work on slim and there is a post here about it too. The FFC is from a sony DVD, CD burner drive from a dell dimension 2350.

I think somebody deserves some serious R&D status.

That would be nice :cry2: I miss my Advanced R&D status.

Ya its more of a novelty item I don't really carry around any of my other normal psps anyway and I think the built in keyboard and cool flip screen is worth the thickness

that's tight. it must have took a lot of time fitting everything together. cant wait to see it in action.
Title: Re: PSP Laptop model .5
Post by: EliteGamer83 on June 02, 2009, 09:46:41 AM
No, not exactly.

A FPC stands for Flat Printed Circuit and FFC stands for Flat Flex Cable. They are more or less the same thing. Think of the PSP Innards, the FPC is like what comes out of the LCD, then you connect it to a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connector. Which intern then the leads out the back go to wherever assigned. So in a way yes it does require soldering but in a different way then what you specified.
Title: Re: PSP Laptop model .5
Post by: folklord36 on June 02, 2009, 10:10:36 AM
Yes the FFC requires another 30 pin ZIF connector to be soldered onto the connector where it plugs into the PSP mobo. Its kinda one of those things you only get one shot at if its not soldered on perfect the first time the chances of getting it off for another try is almost imposible with a regular soldering iorn.

Probably because he didn't drill the hole in the right spot and didn't have time to fix it - he did say that it's not quite finished and that there are some cosmetic things that he still wants to fix.

Wow thanks guys

I never thought id get a post on hackaday or engadget. Thanks alot for my R&D spot back too I havent been around past few days busy with work but more updates to come soon. I was going to make a video of it in current state without any fixes but I decided the time was better spent making those fixes so now its back in pices ill post some assembly picks in a few days. I dont think Ill address the FCC much more on this build as I cant think of many ways to cover it more. I do plan to do another 1.0 model with either a PSP go or slim I just need to find a nice case from like a little toy laptop I always thought a DS phat case would be cool just not sure on measurements if it will fit or not.

To All,
Please beware that folklord36 is a thief and this mod is basically stolen, I paid folklord36 for this laptop psp mod and sent him my psp and paid him, He told me it would take a few weeks then that turned into months and it was always some story a death in the family, he had to move then finally after waiting and waiting, I saw this pop up on Engadget and I emailed him, he said that it was a couple of days away from being done, that was weeks ago now he is not answering emails and ducking me  on AIM,  I know this site is not responsible for deals gone bad.  But i just want people to know what type of person this guy is, I waited so long and was nice even offered him a bonus for all his hard work.

He is basically a thief.

Be warned.

Never mind the question, why would i make something like this up?

Some people have the intentions to get back at someone but i would never expect that from Folklord. Seems its much harder to trust people then ever before no matter how great they are at what they do.

hey this is awsome!

i got a few questions for my projekt:

how have u extended the display cable, i don't know what FFC means and google doesn't give any answers...

is there a posibility to turn the display upside-down, but with a button lke the one from the umd-recognizer?
so if u flip the display down it touches the button and it turns upside-down... i need a solvation for the hardware(where to solder this button) an one for the software (so the psp knows what to do)

is there any possibility to do this, please send me a massage or post your answers here if u have any ideas... thanks for that guys!!

I just joined this website for more info on the PSP laptop mod and wondered, are there plans to follow for making this mod? I really like it and want to make one of my own but really don't know how to connect everything (specially the keypad [interface]), that is an X-Box keypad, correct? I very much would like to do this on my PSP and would post my progress in homage to your mod, folklord36.
