Title: PSP External Dualshock Controller
Post by: Blizzrad on May 26, 2008, 04:58:15 AM
*Update*

For those interested in how to hardwire input devices to a PSP, or use a hardwired microcontroller to manage input from unmodified devices, more information can be found here (https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=17761.msg133741#msg133741).

This post once contained pictures and video of a busted playstation controller that had been rewired to control a PSP through a 25 pin connector. The image and video links are dead so all of this has been removed. However, in the time since this post was created new and improved projects have been posted by other users on the forum complete with pictures and video:

1: "psp octo mod malaysia" (https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,36297.msg273859.html#msg273859)

2: "[WiP] PSP With PS2 Controller" (https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,34966.msg264169.html#msg264169)

Brilliant mate!   Love the way you can turn the psp off via the analog on/off button. i remember there being a rumble mod for the psp, could you make this controller mod, but incorporate the rumble using the one's already in the controller? so say when you get a load noise from getting smacked up in a game, the controller rumbles.

Yeah you could, It would have to work when the speakers reach a certain pitch. The motors would have to be replaced but it is a simple mod.

all yeah need to do is put PSP batteries in place of the rumble motors and wire them internally, so it acts as an auxiliary power source as well.  As it is lacking LED's pimp that thing out man!

That's a great idea, but i don't think you could get a psp battery in the controller. not where the motors are at least.

or you can wire the motors up to some tact switches and put the switches below the L&R buttons in the ps3 controller so you can have rumble

Very true! if this had some sort of mount that locked the psp in place then that would help for portable game play. One solt is better, don't see how some people prefer the 4 usb ports. so much place used and it's ugly.

Keep going dude.
I still want to meet you or your soldering iron.
What soldering iron do you use?
I use a weller WM15L 15Watts and I need a new and thinner tip.
You are very good at soldering!! You're a master!
Title: Re: Single Connector External DualShock Controller
Post by: MadMax11 on May 28, 2008, 11:02:28 PM
Very clean and well done.
I think the reason that some people like F00f00's 4 usb connectors better is because they are semetrical.  I know that there is not enough room to wire this connector on the top or bottom easily, but I think that's what would make this mod truly amazing.
Although, very well done. Did you use a dremmel to cut the hole in the trim?  A scalpel?

A switchable 15/30w iron from RadioShack, but I keep it set to 30w for almost everything. I get the tips for it at a local hardware store because their prices are much better, I usually switch between a chisel tip for desoldering, and a pointed tip for everything else.
I see. I just need a new tip and then I'm ready again to mod and make a cool pad
I wanted for so long to play a game at it's fool awesomeness!!
The tip I have now cost me 10euros and it's not that thin and a bit burned on the
end so I need to find a place with better, cheaper and thinner tips.
Thank you Blizzrad! You rule.

I've got to get a new tip too but the one I've got now will have to do. Its a little burnt at the top but added a bit of solder to it to get it good again.

I can do the job with the one I have now but it's gonna be a bit hard and with bad soldering.
Though if I'm so very impatient I'll do it with my current tip and play all day with my new pad!!

2) can i see some pictures of how you connected the wires to the board in the ps2 controller please

ok thanks man ill look forward to them, one more question, do you need the board that is in the ps1/2 controller to wire to or can i connect the wire directly to the connector and analouge sticks, if i do need it then i think i need a new controller, also because this is not like when its connected to the psp do i need the chip where you connect the second analouge stick to or can you remove that and just wire to the pads where the pins were?

thanks in advance

you might want to have some fairly good equipment as well. very fine tipped iron, steady hands, all the necessary stuff.

My dad is a electrician and has soldering irons of various sizes and solder ect so il have all the nessessary stuff, The only item i may not have is the 25 pin connectors but im sure some of the junk in my house has a couple lemme just have a rummage to find out.

Which mods should i do as more practice?
I was thinking of doing the led mod as i heard that it is the best one for getting better at Soldering. But i want to also try the dual nub mod with the razorx as an alternative to this one, but i cant find a tut for the slim installation, unless its the same.
Title: Re: Single Connector External DualShock Controller
Post by: gr8npwrfl on August 25, 2008, 01:59:45 PM
Find some old printed circuit boards
with surface mount chips on them.

Practice re soldering the chips and see how
are it is to solder one and not get solder on the one
next to it.

If you make a mistake see what it takes to remove
the soldering without damaging the board

Practice makes perfect.

Hmm well ill get some practice in and when i feel i am ready i will give it a crack on an older psp of mine. Although if that other one does come out soon ill prolly wait for that as it does seem alot less work for the same result =) But atm this one still stands as the main one ill try.

The hardest soldering part is soldering onto the ps2 controller ribbon cable, lucky i had 2, becuase i melted the first one. I had an old ipod nano(broken) that i toke apart for the adapter. When i took it apart, it looked like there is no place to solder to it.

I actually tried it and it didn't work. Don't know why. I followed the diagram to the letter, but no such luck...To my knowledge, nobody actually every did it, just the diagram.

He’s got a point. Seriously, this is old news. I did this a long time ago with a psp2tv adapter. It was used for video output on the fat psp before sony made the psp slim wireless internet (http://www.firstwebhosting.net/wireless-internet-access.html). But all you had todo was hook up a few spliiters that came with the kit where the button pads hooked in. You’d plug the button pads into one plug and the psp2tv into the other, and just hook a ps1 or ps2 controller tothe psp2tv dock.
