Title: Redesigning the 360 Controller Tutorial
Post by: SYSTEM aka (Cyberpyrot) on October 18, 2008, 02:47:48 PM
DIGG THIS (http://digg.com/xbox/Redesigning_the_360_Controller_no_buttons)

Redesigning the 360 Controller is very easy to do with the simple tools like fiberglass resen and bondo body filler... There are many reasons to do this comfort, gaming edge, handicapted, or just for the fun of it.. in the first part we will look at the phisical part of this mod shaping the controller for the new electronics to fit.. In part two of the tutorial we will show how to re-map the analog sticks..In part Three we will introduce a secret chip and show how to add some of our other chips like rapid fire and rapid reload.. In the final Part we will look at the finished product..

Most Parts will either be added to the shop Also you can get some insane Rapid fire kits Here

Tools needed:

1: Fiberglass Mat
2: Fiberglass Resen
3: Bondo body Filler
4: 80,400,1000,2000 SandPaper Wet/Dry
5: Dremel or cutting tool
6: Primer heavy scratch fill type
7: Paint of desired color
8: Mini paint brushes
9: Xtra faceplate from coolmods.co.uk

From a second controller cut out the right side analog stick on out side of the ring and sand down so it looks like this with the 80 grit sand paper..

Now on another controller cut out the D-Pad location on the inner circle and sand smooth also cut away the left analog to fill later..

Now what you will notice it the outer diameter of the analog fits in the inner diameter of the removed D-pad location Thank you Microsoft.. Move it around till it fits perfect

Now sand the entire controller down with the 80 grit sand paper so the fiberglass has somthing to adhere to..

Now for the fiberglass work... (This Is very Dangerous stuff.. Do outside supervised.) you will need to mix the resen with the activater per the container directions. Make sure you have everything ready as you will have very little time to work with this material... once mixed brush some on the controller place the fiberglass mat on the controller the brush more resen on the mas working out all the air bubbles..

Once fiberglass hass cured (about 5 minutes) shape the controller with the 80 grit sandpaper...Repeat Fiberglass and Shaping untill you get the desired resultes dont panic about the minor dips and imperfections we will fix those later..

Next shoot the primer about 8 inches form the controller 3 thick coats allow 24 hours to cure..Once cured sand down with the 400 grit sand paper and look for the imperfections..

Now mix up the Bondo and the mix solution per the container instructions.. Apply Bondo to the dips and imperfections let cure for (about 1/2 hour) and sand smooth with the 80 Grit sand paper.. Repeat the Primer and the bondo process as many times as needed to get a smooth surface usualy about 3 times.

Shoot the controller With 3 more coats of primer and let cure for 24 hours... It should look really nice now..

I already moved the analog stick on the mobo (Tutorial comming soon.) im testing the fit in this picture before I paint the controller..

Ok after about five sprays of flat black and alot of wet sanding here is the finished paint job...

Part two relocating the analog Stick

Step one you will need a desoldering tool like the one pictured

Next you will need to remove the trigger potentiometer and assembly you will need to desolder the three points then pull the trigger off..

Now you will notice the points on the back of the controller for the analog stick. you will need to desolder all 14 points..

Six points are for the two potentiometers, Four points are for the push down button, and the last four are for supporting the analog stick to the PCB.

Here you can see with the desoldering tool the analog stick comes off cleanly..

Once the analog stick is removed you will need to clip off the four support post and bend the 10 pins to the side ..

As you can see I place some duel sidded sticky tape on the bottom to allow for placement on the PCB.

Now I placed the analog stick in its new position where the D-pad used to be..

Next solder wires to all pins so they make contact to there original positions. As you can see here I only soldered three wires of the 10 needed to be soldered..

Finaly solder the trigger assemble back to its original position...

Take a look at evercoat everglass its so much better than bondo. It flexes, ware as if you were to torque bondo it would crack. Its easer to sand and it cures much faster than bondo. Just a tip I wish I would have had before I started working with bondo.

2. Have you gotten the secrety code from mike yet? If you have when can we expect the next part?

3. Can you give us a hint on what the secret chip is goign to do? please  :beg: Or just pm me and I won't tell anyone else  Unless they offer me money  :greedy: or a psp 1000

I'm doing this to my controller, but your second post is missing the pictures, which are pretty important considering the way you typed out your second post.  I'd be extremely thankful if you would reupload them.

And also, did you ever consider that the 2 analog sticks might be too close together when it is done?  At first I was considering doing this:
http://www.blogcdn.com/xbox.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/conmod1-7108.jpg (http://www.blogcdn.com/xbox.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/conmod1-7108.jpg)
But I realized it would be much harder to get used to aiming in FPS games, and yours would be much easier on the thumbs.

I apologize for bumping such an old thread, but I'm interested in doing something similar and I was hoping someone could clarify on this.

Now I placed the analog stick in its new position where the D-pad used to be..

Because the analog stick is housed in metal parts, what exactly is allowing for it to be placed over the D-pad contacts without it completing those circuits and having those buttons act as though they're pressed? What's preventing it from bridging any of the electrical parts below it in general?

Thanks!

The bottom of the analog is all plastic, you will just need to bend up the 4 legs of the metal housing

i just want to move the left stick to where the dpad was and also leave the 4 buttons in the same place
