Drummerdude's PSP360 controller mod
« on: September 02, 2012, 07:30:03 AM »
Here is the controller I will be modding

I've been planning this controller mod for a while now and I call it the Pacman pro controller. I'm going to modify the controller so that way there is an atari 2600 controller port on the controller and you can plug in an original atari 2600 controller and play arcade games on the xbox like pacman using an arcade joystick.

I thought of this mod when I was playing pacman on the xbox and I kept on moving in the wrong direction accidentally because of the xbox's d-pad. I realized that I needed an arcade joystick to substitute the d-pad.

To my delight, after opening up an atari controller, I noticed that there were no components inside the controller. The controller works by putting ground to any of the pins on the controller port. The atari joystick will be the d-pad, and the fire button will be either a or start.

I will most likely be replacing the rol leds and giving this 3rd party controller a cool paint job. I might even do an xbox controller redesign if I have enough time.

Update: I was trying to desolder the analog stick with a desoldering iron with an old tip and I totally ruined the analog stick. I'm thinking about getting a new controller. I could probably just get a new analog stick from another controller, but in the long run, I'd rather not use a cheap 3rd party controller. So now I have to get a controller and a new desoldering tip.

New plan: I'm going to put a wired xbox 360 controller into a psp 1000 case. I have a 4.3 inch screen that fits perfectly into the screen hole on the psp. The triangle, square, circle, and x buttons will be the a b x y buttons. The bumpers will be digital xbox 360 triggers. I will have 2 psp analog sticks for the xbox 360 analog sticks. The rb, lb, ls, and rs buttons will be tact switches underneath the psp. There will be a 3.5mm audio jack where I can plug in the a/v into. I have named this the psp360.

I have never used a psp analog stick for the xbox 360 joystick, but I will experiment with it once I buy some psp analog sticks.
I found this diagram for the psp joystick so I don't see why this won't work.

My psp analog sticks came in the mail today. It took me a few tries to get it working on the xbox controller because I had the axis' wired wrong and it was doing 360s when i wasn't even touching it. It was really frustrating. But when I finally got it working, it felt  really nice. I'm getting full range on the psp sticks and no tippy toes either. Now that I got that out of the way, I'm going to buy my psp shell and the other supplies I need.

This is not the controller I'm using, i just used it because I have yet to buy a wired controller.

I got my psp housing and the speakers today. I chose a white psp. I decided to use a psp 1000 because they are thicker than the other ones, but seeing how small it is on the inside, this is going to be hard to pull off. I'm waiting on a wired controller from rodent to use. I need to buy some smd tact switches for the home buttons. I'm going to hollow out the inside of the housing and epoxy in the umd door and the battery cover since the plastic that hold them in is going to be cut off so I have more room on the inside. I still need to buy my screen too. I still need a lot of parts, but atleast I have enough to that way I can get some progress done.

I found this stereo jack to female a/v connector cable on ebay. It looks good, except it doesnt have a pinout for the jack. I'm either going to buy that, or make a custom cable.

I dremeled out the inside of the psp case. I epoxied the parts back in. I drilled the hole for the second analog stick. I got my wired controller. I wired the psp analog stick to it and one of the axis is inverted. I searched around for a little bit, and I think I know how to fix it. If I can't, I guess I will have to use the wireless one that I first tested it on. My screen should be in the mail tomorrow and I will start mounting the buttons into the case. I will post a pic once I get that done.

EDIT: I got my psp analog sticks working normally.

Big update: I got the dpad and abxy, and both analog sticks in the case. I wired the analog sticks up to the controller and tested them out. They work fine, but there is a small tiptoe on both of the x axis' so I'll try putting a small resistor on those lines to see if I can get rid of it. It is still playable, but annoying still. I got my screen and it fits perfectly into the case. The xbox 360 looks good on the screen. The screen came with a female av cable so I will have that stick out of the psp case. There are only two av ports, so I will use mono audio. Anyway, the speakers are to close to have the effect of stereo audio, so it wont make a difference. Please excuse my horrible pictures.

Thanks for the comments guys!

I got 4 tacts on the back for rb, lb, rs, ls. The shoulder buttons are mounted too. I figured out how to get the triggers be digital. The only buttons that aren't accounted for are the back, start, and guide. I have 2 smd tacts from a ds lite mobo i might use if i dont break them when taking them off of the mobo. I test fitted the controller and screen inside the case and it closes up!

AHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I totally ruined the front half of the case! I was taking out the clear plastic covering the screen because it had scratches on it (it came like that), and I snapped the case. It is not reparable while still having the unit looking attractive. It stinks because I was going to finish this tonight! The back half is still fine so that can be salvaged. I need to buy a new psp 1000 housing for the front now. I hope I can finish this in time.

I just bought the new housing. It should be here on the 22nd, which leaves me 9 days to finish it.

I'm really sorry guys. I have not had power for 8 days now because of Hurricane Sandy. I want to make a video to show off the mod even if i cant participate in the mod off because this is a really awesome mod. I'll see if one of my friends will let me come over tonight so i can make a video of it. I dont think i will have power for a while, I heard maybe by thanksgiving i will get it back.

Can someone let me know that if i make and submit a video tonight, then i can still participate. I'm really upset that i couldnt do this earlier, but it is hard to get online with bad internet connection and no power at home.
