Multi-Optional Switch Controller(to help Falcenheart)
« on: October 26, 2011, 08:05:15 PM »
So I was reading a recent post in the Voice Recognition Controller Thread and saw we had a new disabled member(Falkenheart) who needs help with controller adaptations. He's interested in voice recognition(https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,14765.msg306495/topicseen.html#new) and EvilControllers Adroit Switchblade controller(http://www.ablegamers.com/hardware-news/adroit-switchblade.html). He would like a controller that utilize switchable buttons and voice recognition in 1 controller. I offered to help since I am also a disabled gamer and because I'm almost finished with my switch board controller(https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,40570.0.html), which is similar to the Adroit Switchblade.

I would like to work with another AM member to build a clean quality mod. The switchboard controller I'm building works great but looks are not so clean since it's my 1st try. So I'd need assistance with certain components that I'm not as good at, such as speech recognition. We'd be refining the Switchblade & Voice features into 1 design.

I told him I'd split some cost with him and all he'd have to pay for is the controller, switches and any special mod parts, such as led's and rapid fire. I'd cover female plugs, male jacks, cables, project box/enclosure and materials. If someone can donate a controller any other parts it would be greatly appreciated. Please let Falkenheart and I if your interested in assisting.

Thanks,

SixtyninNaMoose

ok ok. so you want to duplicate the switchblade and add voice recognition.. that is going to be huge. like size wise. but if you keep at it i believe you can do it.. good luck. i got got any spare parts laying around

dont think it would be impossible.. but challenging.

get the dimensions for the switch blade. add plugs on the sides like on the voice recognition controller.. not impossible. nothing is impossible

Hey thanks for your input Colt & Pete. I think we could use some trigger assemblies and pots if you have any lie'n around colt. Also if Falken decides he wants to try the voice module from sparkfun, we could use some pointers Pete.

Also I started designing a switch box for falken in autocad. I'm going to use 1pole 2.5mm plugs for basic buttons, 2.5mm stereo plugs for the triggers and 6 pin din connectors for the analogs. Heres the box so far.

Hey guys, here's some pics of my finished plug box. I will be working on the other parts of this mod and will continue uploading updates. Oh and the jacks shown are actual plugs that I plan to order, this model is 85-90% accurate. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. all jacks are 2.5mm stereo and all plugs are 2.5mm stereo right angled.

ok so here's a mini joystick enclosure design to be used along side the plug box. the joystick being used is from digikey http://search.digikey.com/us/en/products/254SA104B50B/254SA104B50B-ND/1755924 and the box will be custom.

here's an enclosure for a mini 5-way switch(http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/CK-Components/TPA511GLFS/?qs=vOd3edNlRKDszH7fGAx32g%3d%3d). I was thinking we could just wire the forward & backward directions for each finger, like in your drawing Falken.

How does the switch work? do you, push it down, push in a direction, or turn then push? also is there a way the white switch can be shorter? my original thought was to have 2 cherry style switches i could put my finger between because my fingers  hang down with a 2 inch elevation to my arm and wrist. if i could elevate both wrists my hands would hang down and i could move my finger foward/back.

A switch like this seems optimum, but i don't know for sure
http://search.digikey.com/us/en/products/DB1C-A1AA/CH288-ND/280834?wt.z_cat_cid=Dxn_US_US2011_Catlink

or possbly a lever switch
http://search.digikey.com/us/en/products/DC1C-A1RB/CH606-ND/418131?wt.z_cat_cid=Dxn_US_US2011_Catlink

Though this may work, Option is the keyword here. This could be interesting.

These switches are operated by pushing it up, down, left, right and center push. It's basically a micro joystick the works like a d-pad but with a center click, i use switches like these but they only have function. I've tried switches like the ones your showing, the ones i'm describing are easier by far from my own gaming experience with them. I also elevate my wrist to allow my fingers to hang while playing, so i know how you feel. In my situation its easier to push/tap/bump a button in a certain direction that your fingers like going, rather than pushing straight down. Another big difference between using a push down button versus one that will allow a simple tap is speed, just tapping the button allows you to click roughly 2x faster without button mashing.

So you have 3 options:

1)  We can use a push down button like the buttons you linked, are the ones used in mice.

2)  We can use a single position switch that goes in all directions, no matter what direction you push it, it only has one function.

3)  We can use a 5-way switch(up,down, left, right, center) with either up & center, up & down or up & down or any combination you want. Remember its like option 2 but each direction has a function.

We can make the part you push on to be as short or as long as you want.

It seems to me that you'd benefit from the 5-way only using up & down, which means moving your finger forward & backwards. It may be a good idea to send a few different switches to you, so you can see which ones you like.

Well, I could give the 5 way switch a try i'll probably buy a few of my own for testing purposes, Record data on my prefrences, it may give me the insight on what works for me, I do prefer this site for finding a controller solution, there are more options than any of those sites that say they have the solution, but only offer a limited amount of possibilities, here the possibilities are endless! Back to the topic, i'll figure this out and get back. I'm guessing they don't require much force, and if I can perform more movements you could add those functions? but like you said

but i'll see

if you want I can send  you some buttons that I haven't used and one of the joysticks if I don't break the 1st 1, I bought 2 of each mini joystick and I got 3 different kinds. Also I can give you some links for 5-way switches that are cheap, wouldn't buy 1 from sparkfun they are a bit pricey.

Hey guy's I got some updates for ya. I've been very busy building and testing my design for Falcenheart. Finally done with the testing/prototyping phase of the controller, now to make the fully functional version.

Here's the pics of the prototype.

Here an update for the real deal, just started the rebuild today. So far looks very clean. Didn't get enough plugs though, so i'll be ordering more.

So I got the rest of the 3.5mm plugs mounted in the controller box(as shown below).

I also built an enclosure for the 5-way switches with headers to connect the 3.5mm cables to the pins on the switches. Look below.

Hey Guys,

It's been a minute here's an update of this mod redesigned a bit. The controller only lack an enclosure for the switches/stick, should be done in a few days.

Here ya go:
