i recently found a website that will send free samples of LEDs that you choose. you can request several different types and they will mail them together. the website is KingBrightUSA.com i just recently got over 50 0603 LEDs from them for free.

no im not looking for you guys to do anything special for it like those free xbox 360 things. this is a company that distributes bulk amounts to other companies. you request a sample and they send you want you ask for.

When you find the LEDs you want all you have to do is clock on the ship free samples or something like that and fill out the form

Almost all, if not most manufacturing companies offer some sort of free samples.... sometimes they advertise them, sometimes you have to ask for samples from them, sometimes you have to ask their distributors.

Microchip has an excelllent free sample service, but you may need to pay for shipping, many places charge shipping or ask for a shipping account to weed through the hobbiest requests crowd... so all you have to do is be professional... dont use a gmail or other free email accounts. if you use a .edu account be upfront about your school project, or claim that you are a proffessor who is evaluating a product for a course. Comanies like the idea of giving parts to college kids because soon enough the college kids are engineers and will buy parts.

Free samples are generally only given out by manufacturers and distributors, which in this day n age can also be retailers. Unfortanately our shop is neither a manufacturer or a distributor, we are a reseller so we can request free samples however as a small business it is impossible to implement our own sample system because our volume sales would never return the investment, much less profit from it.

Example, lets say TI gives out $200k in free products, all it takes is one $1M+ order to make all those samples a worthwhile investment even though only a couple of them are responsible for the big sale. the sample system only works with bulk or wholesale selling... since most people dont buy things in bulk at a retail store, a retail store cant give samples because people would just get samples and not buy because they are only after the single item.

actually i have just been saying it is for a personal hobby and they have sent several different shipments to me without any charges. i think that if everyone just asked for what they need and not tons of extras that you may want in the future, we wont run into any problems.

Cool but I personally enjoy getting led's from uniqueleds.com just because they have only one type of smd and all the 5mm and 3mm lights. They are not too expensive either.

for ps3 and xbox 360 is 1.6X0.8 mm in the controllers. i have been told the Wii motes are the same size, i can't say first hand though. you may also find this size on others sites as "0603" smd led. this website has green, orange, yellow, red and blue. there are even options with zener diodes inside.

I received my free sample this morning and I'm thrilled with the quality of the product! I ordered two bi-color SMD LEDs, But heres the really funny thing, two SMD LEDs came in the mail in a box the size of a textbook... i wonder how much shipping was i mean honestly they could have sent it to me in an envelope.

Yea I received mine yesterday and the box made me laugh as well. But Energy, I don't need to know the size and kind of LED to go into a controller, just a xbox 360 case for my window mod?

you can use some standard 3mm LEDs to light it up. if you choose to use 5mm you will have fewer points of light and may not make your lighting look even. it would all depend on what your window looks like and how many light sources you want to use on your project.

but in all i like using these guys because the sample size is more light than you really need. also if you request multiple samples they will send them all together. then yea the packaging will make more sense lol.

Dubbed could you go to my 360 Project (WIP) thread and tell me if 3mm or 5mm would be better? I might use the clear 5mm ones I got off the site already to use for my metal vents I am putting in.

i've seen that one and i have to say you did a nice job with cutting. i think that you should use 3mm leds so that you can spread your light out. be sure to look up a calculator to know how many you can use and what kinds of resistors you will need.

Nice, now before i go and do this, what exactly do I say, and do you put your reason in the questions/comments or do they contact you and how? Also, what should i fill out for company just make one up.

Edit: Somebody said before to use a non-free email. so would I be better off using a comcast email address or a website one like my anonamous@codglitch.com ?

it depends on what you ask for. i got 15 0603 each of a few different colors. so denpending on what you ask for you may get alot and you may just get one.

oh, well i only asked for one kind. Now that i think about it I should have gotten Red too cause thats pretty cool.

btw how many days did it take 4 u to get yours?

the blue LED's i got were crap. They didnt light up on the controller without soldering on them even when the polarity was correct. And they are really, really dim. Nothing like what you see on youtube with blue leds. Not even close.

I dont see how that could be since its going directly to the same place where the original LEDs were. I did the exact same thing as seen in the tutorials. and I got a different result.

blue LEDs sometimes need more power to operate. if you didn't get the ones with the higher frequency they would likely be lower quality for what you wanted to use them for. also if you have bridging under the LED they may not work very well.

try to re-install them but be sure to wick away all excess solder from the board and clean all the flux residue off of the area around them. the end product should be just as bright as the green is normally. keep in mind that blue is a low density light and may not show as well in a well lit room.
