3.5mm male to USB 2.0 female
« on: December 25, 2009, 10:35:19 AM »
i just got a new pair of headphones for xmas [7.1 surround sound!] but they only have a usb connector. could i make some makeshift 3.5mm to femail usb by myself? or do they sell these for cheap anywhere? i couldnt find it on the net. but if i could make one that would be easier.

"I don't think it would be possible. The headphones most likely have an integrated sound card and wouldn't be possible to convert to a 3.5 jack."

depends, I know the 2nd gen iPod shuffle uses a TRRP 3.5mm as it's only connection and the USB is wired through there. the headphones use a TRP 3.5 and the data connection is TRRP 3,5 to USB... but it's set up that way...  if you rewired the headphones to a 3.5 then the female 3.5 would have to be wired the same way and connected to USB... probably easier to just use the USB and leave it as is...

Ok so when you say TRRP and TRP what does you mean. I have a female USB that I have soldered four wires to and a 4pin 3.5mm male Jack with 4 wires attached to it as
well. How do I find out the correct way to connect them. These are
logitech g35's btw thanks

Sorry not TRP and TRRP, I meant TRRS and TRS...

TRRS is Tip Ring Ring Sleeve, TRS is Tip Ring Sleeve. it corresponds to the parts of a 3.5 connector... Wiki Linkage That will explain it much better than I will be able to without an extremely long reply...

So TRS would be tip as pin 1, rung as pin 2 and sleeve as
pin 3. And I connect them to the 1 2 and 3 on the USB? How do I know what is the right order

I'd hate to say it, but unless u can separate the USB connector and pin point what goes where, and somehow feed an additional 5v to it. Yes i suggest doing nothing, because nothing u do will work.

G35 -> Ipod wont work because Ipods dont support 5v through headphone jack. So u would need Headphone jack --> 5v t-> g35. Even then fit might not work and u could blow ur headphones. Its honestly NOT worth it.

while taking into account that the USB headphones probably have their own soundcard, i doubt anything u do will work, DAC converter might work, however i think itll sound like crap because theres no way it has the same power as the computer..

But then he would be wasting the awesomeness of 7.1... If you don't want them just return/sell them and buy something else?

even still the headset via usb needs power to run them speakers so one jack isnt a good idea cuz i dont know any jacks that push that much power on everyday mp3 players so that wouldnt be a viable reason. ex my 5.1 turtle beach ear force hpa2 headset uses a usb to power it which is nice over the wall plug.
like jacob said keep it or sale it.
