the first one connects to your serial port of your pc, if you have a laptop your screwed.

you can twist the 2 metal nuts and remove the covet if need be, to keep from buying a 9-pin serial cable.

lol i dont have a 9 pin serial cable but i have like 8 of the ones that go into the pink input on your picture. i think there cables for scanners or printers, but can i take one of those apart and cut it up to use that?

Is a db9 female to db25 male cable ok? One side is a 9 pin and the other is one of those big printer pins.

no, the adapters wont work. parallel port requires external power source.

get one of these if you allready have a serial programmer, itll be cheapest way to het started.

search newegg or ebay for pci serial card, you can get one with dual ports for $10, and if you get correct one you can plud programmer into port without the need for a cable. if your programer has female plug, get a male pci cad, so you wont have to buy a cable.

if you want a programer that works on parallel port DB-25 let me know, and ill find you one. range in price from $10-$60.

ill try to find a set of schematics to build one for parallel port.

What software would be ideal to program 12F683 with the Rapid fire ...... where could I find the HEX code that would work on COD5...

What I am trying to do is... program the chip so that is COD5 compatible and use only one setting..... that activates the Rapid fire with the press of the external button... where could I find the hex code that will allow me to do this?
1 mode Rapid fire... that is just under the COD5 clamp

MATLAB is the way to go if ur going to program on microchip PIC if thats wat ur asking, tho u need to know assambley code or have a C compiler. If ur asking about the programmer itself look for one thats supports the pic and the pin configuration sice some programmers dont support diferent pin configurations ( number of pins in the PIC). buying a programmer to program a PIC12xxx, is a bad desition since that family belongs to the basic line of microcontrollers ull wanna buy somthing that supports better PICs and not waste ur money on a programmer exclusively for a PIC16.

For a COD5 rapid fire that featurs only that you dont need a PIC u need an oscilator wich can be done by configuring a 555 to give a clock pulse in the disired frecuency, u can do that by buying a 555 couple of resistor 2 capacitors and a potenciometer and wikipedia, this aproach requieres basic knowlege of electronics and u can ajust the frecuency of shot preatty easily.

As for the code it self PIC12xxx microcontrollers have a very small set of instructions so u must check wich ull need.
but basicly wat u do is send a 1 and 0 to a Output port in the PIC and cycle that, like a clock signal. Ull have to introduce a delay in betwen if u wanna do this right. that will control the frecuency of ur signal.

Start movlw .1
movwf PORTX
call delay
movlw .0
movwf PORTx
goto Start

; in this case ull use that a in the PIC wich u have to find that name since i dont ahve that datasheet in my hands and use the b0 of it as ur Output where ull connect the button. that delay instructions has to be calculated acording the oscilator circuit ur using and u must set the configuration code at the begining of the code.

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: This programmer uses a third party software to load the hex into the chip. Although this is not a bad thing, for only $5 more you can get an ICD2.5 clone from that same website that programs the chips directly from MPLAB. It depends on if you ever want to learn how to program PICs in the future for other stuff as well.

It really is that simple, as long as the programmer works correctly. What keeps scaring people off is that the DIY JDM programmers are so hit and miss for new-comers. It gets to be such a pain when the programmer does not work because serial ports have become obsolete. A USB programmer will gurantee alot less headaches for people just beginning in PICs.

Oh, and Matt has a really good tutorial on how to load the hex file into a third party software. It may not be the same software that this programmer uses, but it should be very similar.

Hmm that thing is like 50 bucks CAD, and honestly I doubt I will learn to program PICs in the near future.

One last question: Where do I get the chips? Microchip has them, but there are like 8 types of them and I dunno which one to get...

look at the free code section in which I provided a link to the assembly of a JDM programer you can get all the parts from radio shack. for like $15. it works great for just a simple 12f683..but like hazer said, if you want to learn how to program and do other stuff in the future, this homemade one is not what you want.

get 4 "samples" from microchip.com for free you need "12F683 I/P"

hi all this is my first post. im looking into buying a programmer for ONE main reason right now. i got an xbox 360 for $30 today. everything functions well except the kid i bought it from was trying to flash his drive and fried it, he never backed up the drive key and circuitboard in the drive isnt responding. ive read that in order to get the "second" pair of the key, i'd have to desolder the flash on the xbox and use a programmer to read it. im decent at soldering but i've no idea where the flash is on a 360, and not only that, but how would i go about getting the right programmer? i know what i have to do and a general idea how to...im just trying to get everything in motion.
